Michael Galas Obituary

Michael “Mick/Mickey” Galas was recently reunited with the love of his life of more than 50 plus years, the late Sylvia (nee Siezega).  He is survived by four daughters: Debra (Bruce) Milleville, Tammy Galas-Kelly, Jessica (Chris) Warthling and Mandy (Joe) Lofft. He was a doting Dziadzie to 11 grandchildren: Carly, Mikaela and Ryan Milleville; Ben (Tori) and Emily Kelly; Madison, Joshua and Kennedy Warthling; Alex, Jason and Kayleigh Lofft.

He was the son of the late Michael and Genevieve Galas. He is survived by his brother Thomas (Beth) Galas, Sister Mary Michaelanne (Leona) Galas, and was predeceased by his brother Richard Galas and sister Felicia (Blake) Roggow. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was a lifelong resident of the Tonawandas, and was an active member of the St. Francis parish and made many lifelong friends with the Marriage Encounter Group. Michael was a life time member of St. Timothy’s RC Church.  In his life he worked several jobs ranging from a grocery store clerk, collision & automotive repair, security, collections specialist and insurance investigator. His longest career was with Niagara Mohawk Power for 28 years, where he was employed as a millwright (mechanic).  While working at NiMo’s Huntley Plant, he was involved with the community action team on many projects, some of which he chaired, including revitalizing the Cherry Farm. He was an avid fan of the NY Yankees.  Both he and his wife, Sylvia, enjoyed their kids and grandkids many sports and activities.  His passion for nature, especially birds, had them traveling extensively across all of North America.  He was always chasing the next “lifer.”  He was an active member of the Buffalo Ornithological Society since 1985 and one of his favorite projects was trapping and banding owls with the NYS DEC.  He also served as a board member for the Friends of Iroquois and recently made many cherished friends within the Hospice community.

He was a friend to all, as can be seen through his treasured connections with people from church, Marriage Encounter, Huntley, BOS, Hospice and people from all chapters of his life.
