Obituary

John Joseph (Mick) McDonald Jr., 83, of North Tonawanda, New York died after a brief illness

on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at Niagara Hospice House. Mick was born in Wilkes Barre, PA

on June 14, 1939 to the late John Joseph McDonald Sr. and Susan McDonald (nee Herron).

Mick was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Carol Lee McDonald (nee O’Connor). He was

devoted to Carol. When Mick served in the United States Navy, he hitchhiked home to

Tonawanda every weekend from Dover, NJ to see his new wife. Together, they raised a closeknit

and loving family—providing an example to all of how to be a superb parent and partner.

Mick was an extremely gentle and peaceful man who loved, supported and accepted everyone in

his life without judgment. He was also very outgoing and friendly and had a long list of family

and friends for whom he prayed each day.

Mick was a devout, lifelong Roman Catholic and a member of Saint Francis of Assisi in

Tonawanda, New York. He attended Saint Francis of Assisi School and Tonawanda High School.

In his youth, Mick was very athletic and played varsity football and ran track for Tonawanda

High School. Mick also had a long and successful career at National Grinding Wheel in North

Tonawanda. After his retirement, he enjoyed camping with his family, golfing, rooting for the

Buffalo Bills and watching movies from his vast collection of films. Mick was an animal lover

and doted over his dogs with affection.

Mick is survived by three children, David John McDonald (Angela), Daniel Joseph McDonald

(Shelley) and Molly Ann Barnard (Larrie), all residing in the Tonawandas, and predeceased by

his son, the late Timothy Michael McDonald. He is also survived by a brother, James McDonald,

and a sister, Mary Lyons, and predeceased by his sister the late Patricia Deemer. In addition, he is

survived by seven grandchildren, Sean Ryan McDonald (Katie), Joseph David McDonald, Garett

Daniel McDonald, Jamie Ann D’Orazio (nee Barnard), Collin Reid Barnard (Brandi), Timothy

Michael Barnard (Ashley) and Ryan Wesley Barnard, as well as seven great grandchildren.
