John Joseph (Mick) McDonald Jr., 83, of North Tonawanda, New York died after a brief illness
on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at Niagara Hospice House. Mick was born in Wilkes Barre, PA
on June 14, 1939 to the late John Joseph McDonald Sr. and Susan McDonald (nee Herron).
Mick was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Carol Lee McDonald (nee O’Connor). He was
devoted to Carol. When Mick served in the United States Navy, he hitchhiked home to
Tonawanda every weekend from Dover, NJ to see his new wife. Together, they raised a closeknit
and loving family—providing an example to all of how to be a superb parent and partner.
Mick was an extremely gentle and peaceful man who loved, supported and accepted everyone in
his life without judgment. He was also very outgoing and friendly and had a long list of family
and friends for whom he prayed each day.
Mick was a devout, lifelong Roman Catholic and a member of Saint Francis of Assisi in
Tonawanda, New York. He attended Saint Francis of Assisi School and Tonawanda High School.
In his youth, Mick was very athletic and played varsity football and ran track for Tonawanda
High School. Mick also had a long and successful career at National Grinding Wheel in North
Tonawanda. After his retirement, he enjoyed camping with his family, golfing, rooting for the
Buffalo Bills and watching movies from his vast collection of films. Mick was an animal lover
and doted over his dogs with affection.
Mick is survived by three children, David John McDonald (Angela), Daniel Joseph McDonald
(Shelley) and Molly Ann Barnard (Larrie), all residing in the Tonawandas, and predeceased by
his son, the late Timothy Michael McDonald. He is also survived by a brother, James McDonald,
and a sister, Mary Lyons, and predeceased by his sister the late Patricia Deemer. In addition, he is
survived by seven grandchildren, Sean Ryan McDonald (Katie), Joseph David McDonald, Garett
Daniel McDonald, Jamie Ann D’Orazio (nee Barnard), Collin Reid Barnard (Brandi), Timothy
Michael Barnard (Ashley) and Ryan Wesley Barnard, as well as seven great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Friday, September 30,
from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hamp Funeral Home, 37 Adam Street, Tonawanda, NY. Family
Mass will be held on Saturday morning, beginning at 11:30 at the Infant Jesus Shrine, 3452
Niagara Falls Blvd, North Tonawanda, NY.
